At the close of the regional conference of anti-corruption agencies from African Commonwealth member countries, held in Cameroon from May 4 to 8, 2026, participants highlighted major progress in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into governance and public transparency strategies.
Speaking at the end of the conference, Dr Roger KORHXITENG emphasized that the 16th edition of the meeting focused on Artificial Intelligence because of its growing role in modern mechanisms for preventing and detecting corruption. According to him, African anti-corruption agencies benefited from the experiences shared by experts from major international institutions, including the World Bank, the United Nations, the African Development Bank and the African Union.
Discussions focused on the practical use of AI in financial investigations, data analysis, fraud detection and the improvement of administrative control systems. The Commonwealth official noted that the objectives of the conference had been fully achieved, with delegations leaving with a clearer understanding of how AI tools can strengthen the effectiveness of their respective institutions.
For his part, Dieudonné MASSI GAMS praised the strong support provided by the Cameroonian government in organizing the international gathering. He highlighted the establishment of an interministerial commission involving several public administrations, including the Presidency of the Republic, to ensure the smooth organization of the conference and the proper reception of foreign delegations.
The president of the CONAC also stressed the significance of Cameroon assuming, for the next twelve months, the presidency of the Association of African Commonwealth Countries for Anti-Corruption. He described this responsibility as a major commitment toward strengthening governance across Africa.
Addressing the issue of Artificial Intelligence, Dieudonné Massi Gams nevertheless called for a balanced approach. While acknowledging AI’s usefulness in accelerating procedures and improving analytical capabilities, he insisted that technology alone cannot replace human integrity. According to him, the fight against corruption must first and foremost rely on ethics and responsibility among public officials. AI should therefore be considered as a support tool aimed at reinforcing human action rather than a miracle solution.
As a gesture of appreciation and institutional solidarity, the CONAC president presented gifts to each member and representative of the participating delegations, bringing the conference to a close in a spirit of cooperation and cordiality.
Through this regional meeting, Cameroon further strengthened its position in African discussions on digital governance and the modernization of anti-corruption mechanisms.
